CO2 Laser Recovery: What to Expect Day by Day

How long does CO2 laser recovery take?

With deeper fractional CO2, the skin surface heals in about 7 to 14 days. Swelling peaks around day two, peeling runs from about day four to seven, and pinkness fades over the following weeks. CoolPeel is much lighter, with about 2 to 5 days of redness and flaking. Collagen keeps improving for three to six months.

Skin flakes and feels like sandpaper. Let it shed on its own.

About 1–3 days after CoolPeel. About 7–10 days after deeper fractional CO2.

PinknessWeeks

Fresh skin stays pink for a few weeks after deeper treatments, then fades.

Day by Day

Fractional CO2 Recovery Timeline

This is the typical path after a deeper fractional CO2 treatment. Everyone heals a little differently, and your provider will adjust your plan at follow-up.

0
Treatment day

Hot, tight and pink

Skin feels like a strong sunburn, with redness and some stinging. You go home with a healing ointment on. Keep the skin moist, use cool compresses and sleep with your head raised.

1–2
Days 1 to 2

Peak swelling

Swelling builds and usually peaks on day two, especially around the eyes. Clear or yellowish fluid and pinpoint spots are a normal part of healing. Cleanse gently as instructed and reapply ointment so the skin never dries out.

3
Day 3

The turning point

Swelling starts to ease. Skin may look bronzed or darker and begins to feel tight and itchy as crusting starts. Do not scratch or pick.

4–6
Days 4 to 6

Peeling

The treated layer flakes and sheds, and skin feels rough like sandpaper. Fresh pink skin shows underneath. Let the peeling happen on its own.

7–10
Days 7 to 10

New skin

Most peeling is done and the surface has closed. Many patients return to work and, once cleared, wear mineral makeup. Daily mineral SPF starts now.

2–4
Weeks 2 to 4

Fading pink

Pinkness fades gradually. Skin looks brighter and smoother but is still sensitive. Strict sun protection matters most here.

1–6
Months 1 to 6

Collagen building

New collagen keeps firming and smoothing the skin. This is when lines and scars show their real improvement.

CoolPeel

CoolPeel Recovery Is Much Shorter

CoolPeel treats only the outermost layer of skin, so the recovery is a compressed version of the timeline above.

Day 0 to 1

Warm and pink

Skin feels warm and looks flushed, like mild sunburn. Most people go about their evening as normal.

Days 2 to 3

Gritty texture

Skin feels dry and gritty, sometimes with a light bronze tone, as tiny treated spots surface.

Days 3 to 5

Fresh and bright

Light flaking finishes. Skin looks smoother and brighter, and most people are fully back to routine.

Common Questions

CO2 Recovery FAQ

Answers to the recovery questions patients ask most.

What's the worst day after a CO2 laser?

For deeper fractional CO2, day two is usually the hardest. Swelling and redness peak around 48 hours, and the skin feels hot and tight. By day three swelling starts to ease and peeling begins. CoolPeel is much milder, with warmth and pinkness for a day or two.

How long does it take to completely heal from a CO2 laser?

The skin surface heals in about 7 to 14 days after deeper fractional CO2. Pinkness can take a few weeks to fade, and collagen keeps remodeling for three to six months. CoolPeel surface healing takes about 2 to 5 days.

How long does it take to look normal after a CO2 laser?

Most people look presentable around 7 to 10 days after deeper fractional CO2, once peeling ends and makeup is cleared. Some pinkness may remain for a few weeks. After CoolPeel, most people look like themselves again within a few days.

How can I speed up healing after a CO2 laser?

Keep the skin moist, sleep with your head raised, use cool compresses, and follow your aftercare plan exactly. Avoid picking, heat, heavy sweating and sun. Picking or letting skin dry out slows healing and raises the risk of marks. See our full CO2 aftercare guide.

Why use vinegar after a CO2 laser?

Some providers recommend gentle soaks with very diluted white vinegar in the first days. The mild acidity helps calm the skin and discourage bacteria. Only use soaks if your provider includes them in your plan, and follow their exact dilution.

When can I stop using Aquaphor after a CO2 laser?

Thick ointment is used until the skin surface has closed and peeling is mostly done, usually around 5 to 7 days after deeper fractional CO2. Then most patients switch to a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer. Your provider will tell you when to make the switch.

When can I take a shower after a CO2 laser?

You can usually shower the same day or next day. Keep the water lukewarm, avoid direct hot spray on your face, and cleanse the treated skin gently as instructed, then reapply your ointment right away.

Can I wear makeup 7 days after a CO2 laser?

Often, yes, once the skin has fully closed and peeling has stopped. Start with clean mineral makeup and only after your provider clears you. Makeup on skin that is still open can cause irritation or infection.
